Introducing Anthony Carr

135 artists are taking part in "Inside Job" which takes place on the 7th and 8th of April on Level 6 of Tate Modern. Over the next few weeks The Rebel Magazine will be chatting to some of the Tate staff who are showing their artwork. Today it's the turn of Anthony Carr
Q) Where did you grow up and what kind of education did you receive? "I grew up in Leighton Buzzard, a small market town in Bedfordshire, about an hour north of London. I had a pretty standard education I think. I passed the grammar school entrance exam but decided to go to my local secondary school to be near my friends and be able to walk to school. Then after school I studied a Fine Art degree at Winchester School Of Art, specialising in Printmaking."
Q) How long have you been working at the Tate and what's the best show you've seen there? "I started at Tate London in August 2006 and have been a casual Art Handler ever since. It’s hard to choose a favourite show having seen or been involved in probably more than 100 over the years, but the Louise Bourgeois, Peter Doig, Tate Triennial, Muybridge and Cildo Meireles were all great, although we are quite spoilt for great shows at Tate."
Q) What can you tell me about the work you're exhibiting in the Tate Modern show? "The piece I’m going to be putting into the exhibition is a small-scale paper sculpture called Untitled (47 Rockets) . It’s actually one part of a much larger collection (47 to be precise) of origami space shuttles and rockets, each made by folding a single photograph. The photographs themselves are images I’ve taken of the Moon as it travels across the night sky. Incidentally NASA engineers have been incorporating origami paper folding techniques in the design of aeronautical equipment for some time."
Q) How can people find out more about your work - do you have a website or do Instagram? I’ve resisted the urge to be on Instagram and Twitter so to find out more about my work you can visit anthonycarr.co.uk Q) Is there anything you have to declare / do you have a favourite quote, thought or joke you'd care to share? "Not so much something that I need to declare, but something that many people don’t know about me, which is I am an identical twin. One day I might get my brother to come to Tate in my place and see if anyone notices."
